Christmas Shopping...for ME!

I'm just about to drop after a long day of shopping at Great Northern with Leslie, Joelle, Leslie's BF Paula and her mom Linda.

We spent THREE HOURS in TJ MAXX!!! I got some great stuff - a couple of presents for others and a LOT of presents for moi.

Had lunch at Wild Mango - what a great space. And terrific Asian fusion menu. (Kudos for the special veg menus for Leslie and me.)

After a little more shopping at the mall (accessories at H&M), I headed home. put the hair in a ponytail, took off the jewelry and makeup and put on a track suit and comfy socks. I'm going to curl up with my new book, Death's Acre, and finish off my bottle of sangria.

Death's Acre chronicles the Body Farm at the U of Tennessee in Knoxville. There they study anthropology - or more specifically, human decomposition.

Sorry, I know it's an unpleasant subject, but I am a forensics junkie. Even before the CSI phenomenon, I was addicted to HBO's show Autopsy. Morbid curiousity, I guess. Autopsy used to give me insomnia. But death science, while creepy, is utterly fascinating to me.

My Hair is Getting Long...and I Like it!

My hair is really getting long. This has been a long time in happening. But it is finally long enough that people who haven't seen me in a few months thought I got extensions.

After having a chin-length shag-inspired 'do for the last 4 years or so, and having it cut very short in the summer of '06 (not exactly by choice), I went in the other direction. And since I am moving further away from corporate image consulting and into just doing my own thing (hey, I work for myself and no one tells me what to do), I thought I would allow myself to wear it long again. After all, I finally - sort of - know what I'm doing with it.

And if anyone questions me about having long hair in a professional setting (which they have), the correct answer is that shorter hair IS more professional, but one's hair must have a definite style - even if long - and it should be out of your face. Too many women shoot themselves in the foot by letting their hair grow out of control, not getting regular trims and putting it in a low ponytail or pushing it back with a headband. Then it's just hair. Not a hairstyle.

But I'm having fun with it and that's what matters most, right?

Requiem for an Old Friend

I received an email this past week from my friend Sandy stating that my old stomping ground, Dallas Shoes, was closing. It sounded like the clearance had been going on for a little while already and I should hurry up if I wanted to get some good stuff before the end.

I used to cut classes during college and go shopping at their old location on Rockside. That was perhaps the greatest predictor of my future career. Screw higher learning, give me shoes!

Dallas closed once before. They used to have several locations. Then one of the parters apparently reopened with just the one big store in North Randall by the mall. Now that store is closing.

There was a sign on the outside of Dallas Shoes that said, "Grand Opening - Fur & Leather Outlet." So I went in, and other than the front right side of the store being partitioned off with fur and leather coats and all the security that comes along with them, the store looked exactly as it has always looked. Still has tons of shoes, clothes and accessories.

Shoes and boots, clothing and accessories were 30% off, sandals were 70% off. Sadly, I had about 5 pairs of shoe boxes stacked up, but I ended up with none. No shoes for KK. Sad day :(

There wasn't a single pair that I couldn't live without.

I did find a cool orange "Serengeti Tours" T-shirt (I dream of going on safari one day), 3 winter hats and a scarf. My collection of winter accessories has grown by leaps and bounds in the last two years. I was having a good hair day until I started trying on wool hats. Can you say "static electricity?!!" My hair went wild!

I was talking to a couple of the sales women who have worked there 17 years (wow!) and 2 years, respectively. They were both sad and saying they didn't know what they were going to do, so I took down their info and said I would see if any of my retail connections would help them find other jobs. That's really awful news just before the holidays.

I am still looking for my elusive cute winter shoes (that are not boots). Going shopping tomorrow with Leslie the Search Guru at Great Northern, so perhaps I will find some. I haven't checked DSW yet. They also have a K&G out there with women's clothes, so I will stop in there too. And they have a great Marshalls. I'll also probably pop by Stein Mart in Westlake too while I'm way out west.

Confidential to my dear LML: I hope you are feeling better soon, babe. I know this is hard for you. You'll be OK.

I love my job....

My plans to go out were canceled tonight, and I was just fine with that. I drank a lot of sangria yesterday and probably didn't need to do any social drinking tonight.
No doubt the pilgrims and Indians drank too much sangria for the first Thanksgiving, and I am merely following tradition :P

So I stayed in tonight and "worked." Work for me can mean looking at celebrity hairstyles for a couple of hours. Seriously.

That's why I love what I do :)

So much for questioning myself for writing a fluff blog earlier today.

Is this fluff?

I read a lot of blogs. Some are politically aware, some are socially-conscious, some are pure fluff. I fear that my blog falls into the latter category, although it was really never what I intended. Once in a while, I go into some kind of a social rant, but mostly I just talk about stupid stuff. Is it too stupid and inconsequential, or is it good to have a diversion from all the more serious stuff out there?

I do have something to say in the world (and it's not just about shoes and clothes), but I sort of wonder why my blog doesn't reflect it. Hmmm....should I work on that or just maintain the status quo?

Why am I even worried about this? I don't know. It just popped into my mind. By reading my blog, one might think that I am superficial and vapid. Well, yes and no. But mostly no. There is so much in the world that I could complain about, but I would prefer to focus on levity and fluff. Most of the time, my silly little blog provides it.

Just a little deep thinking on the day after Thanksgiving. Must be the sangria.

A Middle Eastern Thanksgiving

I am on a super Middle Eastern food kick. So what am I going to be eating for Thanksgiving? Guess! My homemade tabbouleh (just learned how on Sunday!), pitas, lentil and fattoush salads, and hummus! Maybe a couple of stuffed grape leaves too. Oh yes, and a bottle of (good) sangria! (Not that sangria is mid-eastern - I just always drink it on holidays.)

I'm bringing extra food because I know people will be sampling the weird stuff I'm eating. Some of my family have braved a taste of my Tofurkey, but I know this is stuff they've never tried.

I'm the vegetarian "freak" of my family, everyone is always trying to offer me turkey because they think it's funny. I'm not some kind of an animal rights activist or anything. I am sensitive to animals and always have been (much more than people, I tell you!) and I decided I didn't want to eat meat at age 8. Now, I think it's a little trendier for little kids to steer clear of it for health reasons.

But I don't get political about it or anything. It's just my personal choice.

No turkey for me. No Tofurkey either this year.

What are YOU wearing this Thanksgiving?

For many people, Thanksgiving is a day to gorge yourself, wait for the tryptophan to take effect and then rest on the couch with your pants unbuttoned. In fact, one of my best friends emails me every year after dinner at her parents’ to inform me how much she ate and then mentions how she “beached” herself on the couch. I was chuckling yesterday in anticipation of that annual email.

Lucky for us, there are ways to maintain our dignity and still be comfortable AND assure that our clothes fit – even after the biggest meal of the year.

Since most of our Turkey Day activities involve dinner at someone’s house and a lot of couch “beaching”, here are some things to think about!

Are you doing the cooking?
If the answer is yes, then by all means, you don’t want to put on your “good” clothes until you absolutely have to. Comfort and function are what it’s all about. Of course your guests may arrive before you change for dinner, so you want your comfy and functional clothes to look decent too. Forego the sweats for loose-fitting knit pants or one of my highly-recommended velour track suits. Have a T-shirt under it so if it gets too hot in the kitchen, you can just throw the jacket over a chair and not miss a second of turkey basting of stuffing making.

Even after you change into your dinner clothes, you will still be working, so you want to wear something that is easy to move around in, not too heavy, and most importantly, doesn’t have overly long or floppy sleeves. Kimono sleeves in the gravy? No thanks!

Sweaters and turtlenecks are definitely not for the person doing all the work on Thanksgiving, so keep your outfit fabrics a little on the lighter side.

Where are you spending Turkey Day?
Some people go out, some stay home. Some people see relatives they rarely see, and others visit people they see all the time. This all factors into how formally you dress (and act too!).

If there ever was a holiday to opt for function over fashion, this is it! Everyone tends to eat more than anticipated - more than their normal clothes will allow. It’s a matter of fact – it isn’t gluttony, it’s Thanksgiving!

Start with a comfy pair of pants. If you’re going casual for the day, you may want to opt for the jeans that you have the most room in. If you’re going more dressy, if you have slacks with some give to them – either 1-2% spandex or a poly blend, you will be more comfortable. If you opt for a skirt, a loose and flowy one will be a better option than a pencil skirt, for obvious reasons.

Layer on top. You may get hot if you’re helping out in the kitchen, but after you’ve eaten and your food is digesting you may get cold (digestion takes energy away from the rest of the body). Layering is the most obvious solution.

My Thanksgiving will be spent at my aunt and uncle’s house, who took over after my grandparents retired from Turkey Day duty several years ago. I see everyone quite a bit, so I’m not terribly formal in how I dress. But their house is always really cold. So I layer my clothes. The top layer is my “Thanksgiving sweater”, so-named because it is the heaviest wool sweater I own. (On the other hand, Christmas at my parents’ house is as hot as the tropics! I keep trying to open the windows – even if it’s 25 degrees outside – and my mom keeps closing them.)

If you are heading out to dinner, a lot of these considerations don’t matter quite as much – lucky for you! You don’t have to worry about wild and uncontrollable temperature fluctuations and can just dress normally. I’m jealous :)

Accessories
What I’ve found to be the best accessory if you are worried about being too cold or too warm is a lightweight winter scarf. Wrapping it around your neck will keep you warm, and if it gets too warm, just take it off.

An unusual accessory you may also need for Thanksgiving are slippers or fuzzy socks. Many people don’t like shoes in their house, and most of us equate kicking off our shoes with comfort. Have a nice pair of slippers you can bring with you to feel more like home. And if you’re staying home, well then your feet should still be on their best behavior for the day – especially if relatives or friends are coming over!

Modern Day Mr. Rogers?

What do you think about David Beckham's shawl collar sweater?
Did he borrow it from Posh? It definitely fits his metrosexual stereotype.

Could average guys pull off this look? Probably not.
Very bad especially for guys with a thick neck or round face.

A Call in the Browns Favor

Just because we are used to nothing ever going our way....this was freaky!

Browns Bounce to Bizarre Victory

BALTIMORE (Nov. 18) - It was a comeback victory in every sense of the word.

The Cleveland Browns literally had to come back onto the field to complete a 33-30 overtime win over the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday after it appeared the game ended with a missed field goal by Phil Dawson.

The Browns trailed 30-27 on the final play of regulation when Dawson attempted a tying 51-yard kick. The ball hit the left upright and seemingly bounced off the crossbar before bounding into the end zone.

Check out the video.

GO BROWNS - to the playoffs?!

A New Pic

I don't feel like doing the headshots thing right now - at least until after the holidays. I always seem to get them done in January for whatever reason. Maybe because then I'm not tempted to wear a sweater with sparkly Santas and snowmen. (I am just kidding about that!)

I'm much bigger on informality than ever before, so I'm just using pics I like for whatever comes up that I need pics for. For instance, I like this one for my column in Pure Romance's sales magazine, Inspire.

I'm finishing up my first year writing for the quarterly mag. I love it! They are a really classy company located right outside Cincinnati and I can't believe I have this amazing opportunity. I bet a lot of style experts would give their right arm for the chance to write for something like this!

You would probably agree that this fits better than a formal shot in a suit.

A great quote on personal style

From Pamela Anderson (who I believe is an extremely savvy woman, no matter what is said about her):

I like wearing things that I have purchased or things in my closet...I like to own my clothes - instead of getting a free gown from some designer to wear down the red carpet - to be scrutinized by the “experts”..what I wear is authentically me and what I love - I don’t always make the “right” choices but who cares..I’m a woman.

To me, so many celebs look inauthentic because they are over-styled by a professional Hollywood stylist. It's refreshing when someone takes responsibility for being themself. Good or bad, at least they have courage and confidence. The smart ones have a stylist who works in conjunction with them to be true to their own style. This is the case with Pamela.

When I heard the gorgeous and tasteful Katherine Heigl styles herself, I liked her even more. (Saw Knocked Up yesterday and I am now a raving fan. She's a knockout AND a really likable actress.)

My Favorite Blog!

I totally love this blog:

A cool hipster chick right here in Cleveland?! Makes me feel much less alone!!

Mel has great wit and is acerbic and absolutely hilarious!

The Super Glam Life - Tabouleh, Acne &Target

After a busy week, I had dinner last night at super yummy Aladdin's in Cleve Heights with Coach Joelle. I'm jealous of Joelle - she lives right around the corner from it, but the closest one to me is Mayfield Village - still a haul.

I swear I could easily live the rest of my life on their tabouleh and fattoush salad and pitas. I wouldn't even need their yummy falafel or hummus or stuffed grape leaves (try the veg combo without baba ghanouj - bleecch- eggplant!).

Can I say "yummy" one more time? OK - yummy.

I desperately need to learn how to make Syrian/Lebanese/Turkish food. Being a vegetarian, and having a Syrian last name (although I am not Middle Eastern at all), it's just perfect for me. Substantial and flavorful and healthy. All the characteristics of Indian food, but I like it better. I'm just not a big curry fan.

Getting to the point of this post, my life is glam because I spent Saturday evening (it's been dark since 5:30, so it's evening to me) at Target.

Lame, I know.

I wanted to buy the makeup remover towelettes I heard about somewhere. It may have been on the Slave to Target blog. They're from Boots No. 7. Stupid name for a cosmetics company, but they're British, so maybe that's why. (BTW, my new Jobpostings editor is British and I was chatting with him on the phone one day and I just love his accent. It was like being in a Monty Python sketch:O) I also saw Hot Fuzz this week, and the British are definitely not like you and me. But they sure are funny.)

I tried the makeup remover and my face feels really clean. Now we will see how my ultra-mega-super duper sensitive skin fares. I have to use a strong prescription cleanser and a couple of topical prescriptions every day and it's still not in good shape.

GRRRRR.

Of course, I bought a bunch of stuff I didn't need and discovered they carry Frederic Fekkai products. That's good to know. I have several friends who are fans. Naturally, I am stuck with prescription shampoo right now. After I turned 30, I have the worst skin. Just the worst.

Try the Luxe Sangria body lotion. Mmmmmm :)

Naturally, I want real sangria now. Maybe I'll go out and grab a bottle.

Or maybe not. I don't want a dreaded red wine headache :(

I have work to do tomorrow. And a Browns game to watch.

***

Being weak-willed, I had to go out and pick up sangria. Bought Arbor Mist Zinfandel sangria. Hmmm....the jury is definitely out on this, but at least it will kill my craving.

A Launch in the Works

I'm so pleased to announce the launch of StyleCityCleveland.com, coming on February 1st. I am developing it along with my partners Kelly and Wendy. It's a content-based web portal for fashion and beauty enthusiasts.

Cleveland hasn't seen anything like it yet!

The Rule of Two

I bought a pair of kelly green round-toe pumps today. It's a really odd color that I don't really have in my wardrobe. I made sure I found something that was the same shade while I was still at the store. I bought a little tunic that matched.

I always say that in order to avoid being too "matchy-matchy", one can't repeat an accent color more than three times in their outfit. For me personally, I repeat a color only twice, if I repeat it at all.

When I have an opportunity to wear those fun shoes, I will immediately have something to wear with them, if I decide to match that day.

It makes life much, much easier and you look more cohesive when your clothes and accessories look somewhat intentional. And as I always say, throw in a curve that no one anticipated.

(Hey, I suppose now I have a ready to wear St. Patrick's Day outfit, if I want to go out and drink green beer. No, I've never done that before and I don't really plan to start.)

Shampoo

I have no idea why I equate the smell of a shampoo with its effectiveness on my hair. This dawned on me in the shower today. How wacky is that?

What shampoos work the best?
coconut and bubble gum, of course!

Project Runway Girls

Many of us already gossip, rave and moan about Project Runway, so why not do it in an organized forum?

And here it is - our new blog!!

Miss Kel is already joining me in this adventure, and I have invited a bunch of my fashion-conscious friends to contribute as well.

Should be fun :)

Happy Birthday to my Gram

My Gram is 88 today.

I called earlier to say happy birthday, and she and Gramp weren't home. Later I found out they went to Marc's (to pick up pills, of course - we always joke about that) and then dined at Red Lobster.

Tomorrow, we're going
all the way downtown (this is a big deal for them) to Shanghai Restaurant on Rockwell to celebrate. She has been craving Chinese food - and only from that place.
I was almost 3 when this was taken...
it wasn't planned, but I wanted my Gram in the picture.

The day my dad beat up a hippie

In honor of Veteran's Day tomorrow, a funny story from my family.
My Uncle Jim, who told the tale, prefaced it by saying that when he was growing up, my dad was his hero. My dad, the oldest of 5, is almost 16 years older than Jim, who is the youngest. Uncle Jim was 13 when this happened...

On Pearl Harbor Day 1969, they were at a Browns game (at the old stadium, of course) and sitting in the bleachers. They were with two of their uncles. Throughout the whole game, a guy in the bleachers was waving a Japanese flag - some long-haired hippie, my dad and uncle agreed - in an army coat.

Apparently, my dad really hates hippies

After the game, they were walking back to the car when who should they see, out of the 80,000 at the game, but the hippie with the flag.

Fueled by four quarters of watching this moron swinging around a Japanese flag on Pearl Harbor Day (and
undoubtedly by beer as well), my dad went after the guy, ripping off his jacket so he was left wearing just sleeves and he punched him in the face, yelling that he had uncles who fought in that war. (Uncle Frank, who was with them, was one one of the uncles - but my dad was the one who felt the need to pick a fight. Uncle Frank had already fought the Germans.)

My great-uncles piled their blankets and coolers in Jim's arms, as they went after my dad to attempt to subdue him and get out of the area before someone called the cops. (Ironically, my great-uncle Adam, who was also there, was a Cleveland cop.)

And what was my 13 year old Uncle Jim thinking as this was happening all around him?

"Man, this is so cool!"

Uncle Jim thought it would be better to embellish the story and say the Browns were playing the Steelers, since he didn't remember who they were playing that day. Through the wonder of technology, I discovered it was Green Bay - someone is selling a Browns 1969 season card on ebay.

BTW, my Uncle Jim is now a retired Cleveland cop, having spent many years as a homicide detective.

(And since this is for Veteran's Day, my dad is a veteran, having served in the Air Force (before Vietnam), his brother Frank - now deceased - was stationed in Thailand during Vietnam, and at least one other great-uncle that I know of served in WWII.)

What to Wear....to a Funeral

(ugh)

Got the news today that my aunt's very ill mother passed away. And guess what? The wake is tonight and the funeral is tomorrow. My parents' signals got crossed (even though they live in the same house) and both forgot to tell me since Monday. Thanks, guys.

The last time I was at a wake was...at least a couple of years ago. Probably longer. I never know what to wear to these events. I tend to get too dressed up, while everyone else is dressed down (when did death become so casual??).

So what is the first thing I did today? I panicked, running around, lamenting to my dog that I have nothing to wear. Frankly, Bailey is sick of hearing it.

I have about ten outfits I could reasonably wear. It's just that nothing is ever perfect, you know?

I usually just attend the wake, but this time I plan to go to the funeral, so it's imperative that whatever I wear will have to look okay with a medium-weight coat (probably my new lipstick-red trench).

And perhaps most importantly, I must wear orange - yes, even to a funeral.

So....I have a lot of deciding to do.

I always preach taking the path of least resistance, but when I'm in a hurry to find something for a type of occasion I don't usually attend, I tend to overthink matters.

All I know is I went out and bought a bunch of black and brown tights - plain, fishnet, patterned. We'll see what I come up with....

***UPDATE***
I managed to work orange into BOTH of my outfits - even the one I'm wearing with the red trench! Am I super creative? Or do I just have too many clothes??? Perhaps a little of both....

Still Seaching....

That shoe hunt netted me a brown Ann Taylor top and a necklace. Oh, and monkey slippers. Clearly not what I had intended.

Lots of boots, booties and flats of all sorts. But not what I want.

I found a couple of shoes that were just too sporty and clunky for me. I still need feminine and soft, but functional for the Cleveland winter.

I'll keep trying.

P.S. The monkey slippers went into my closet and immediately started tearing up the place. Aaaargh!

In Search of....Cute Winter Shoes

...that aren't boots...

Here's a new little segment for my blog - I'm always seeking something in the stores. Here's me going "In search of", which I may recall was a show on PBS many years ago. Well, instead of going searching for mummies or into the cosmos (or whatever the heck they were doing), it's me, silly, and I'm going shopping!

Until the hail/sleet/whatever that was falling yesterday and today (not sticking, mercifully), I had still been running around in flip-flops. Especially my lime green ones with sequins.

I'm not ready for boots, although they're all lined up and ready for me.

I don't wear loafers (I even hate the word - loafer - it sounds so lazy), and flats kill my feet.

I need: CUTE SHOES that preferably have a 1' platform and a chunky heel.

Out of all the department stores, I saw ONE PAIR. ONE. That's it.

Naturalizer Mojave Clog at Macy's - $49.98
I'm going to go out (in booties, not flip-flops) to see what else I can find.
(KK fact - I used to live in the Mojave Desert - Vegas, to be exact)

I'm allowed to brag, aren't I?

It's my blog, so the answer is "YES!"

As president of the Association of Image Consultants OH/PA Chapter (I am fiercely proud of this chapter I have helped build), we have lots of members engaged and active here in Ohio, but didn't have any participating from PA. Most of them live in the Philadelphia area, which is admittedly pretty far from our meetings in Columbus. So I put out a call to ask if anyone was interested in putting together a Philly-area meeting, and Renu Dalal answered!

Here's a pic from the first-ever AICI Delaware Valley Satellite Meeting! (Thanks to Brian Lipstein at mens store Henry Davidsen for hosting the event!)

Great job, guys!! I'm really proud of you!!!

What a Difference a Year Makes

I decided to crop everyone else out of the AICI board photo and use it as my new blogger pic. It's more representative of how I look now. My hair is much longer and blonder (I was doing a gradual fade to brown last winter for some reason). And my clothing choices....well, they speak for themselves, no doubt.
This made me realize I need some new head shots. Ugh...it's that time again....

KK's Crazy Life

Whew!
It has been a really wild week for yours truly - culminating with an AICI board meeting in Columbus on Sunday. We've never had a board-only meeting before, and it has been needed for a long time. Since I'm the prez, I can do these kinds of things (I'm mad with power, I tell ya!). I got to see three of my fellow board members and great friends - the lovely LisaMarie Luccioni, Erica Torres-Dudziak and Jill Haney. If you want to see three super sharp, intelligent and beautiful women, here they are. Love those girls.

Here's a pic of us at Bon Vie Bistro at Easton Town Center:

(Wow, I look like a wild woman compared to them! Maybe I am - hehe :)

Lisa and I had a chance to practice our rudimentary fran
çais - and we did okay. Comme ci, comme ça. Between us, we probably have 12 years of French classes, and all we could do was tell each other we looked good. Well, c'est la vie for image experts! We're so self-congratulatory!!

I did a little shopping at Polaris Mall after the meeting. Nothing too great - I bought an interesting necklace at Forever 21.

Here it is -
Orange and unusual. I had to have it!

I'm such a goofball - I realized how predictable I truly am. I was holding up a leopard print sweater in a mirror to see how it would look on me and I couldn't really tell and I couldn't figure out why. And then - duh! - I realized the leopard print on the sweater was clashing with the leopard print on my jacket.
How silly :P

Well, I've decided that this girl deserves some rest after the wild week. Catch ya later!

Warming Up, Looking totally HOT

We taped our little fashion show extravaganza today for That's Life on Fox-8 at Westfield South Park Mall in Strongsville. That was totally fun. I can try to control these situations as much as possible, but something still always seems to go awry.

This time it wasn't too bad - the Macy's people put two of the models in a different fitting room, so I didn't know they were there. Otherwise, all went smoothly.

You can see us on the show Nov. 16. We'll be on sometime between 10-11am.

Here's me and Q104's Jen Toohey (check out her blog!), who hosted the segment (a fellow JCU gal!).

And here's us with the models.
