Blog Identity Crisis

I am re-evaluating the purpose of my blog. Over the last two years or so, it has kind of meandered through many stages - my social record (when I was out on the town more), a style guide, my love letter to shoes, place to reminisce about my youth and complain about closet monkeys, an official record of the martinis I've drank, my love letter to 30 Rock, and my special spot to be generally weird.

The title, Keeping Up Appearances, was supposed to lend it to being a style blog (and thank goodness no one from the BBC has called me out for bogarting their show title), but the title now seems to have evolved into meaning me being my quirky and silly little self, but also an image consultant - a paragon of proper behavior and elegance in our society (if you want to see this definition in action, check out Professor LisaMarie Luccioni, the best specimen of our breed).

But I gotta be me. In fact, if I wasn't "Keeping Up Appearances," my blog would read something like this.

I guess the title became kind of ironic sometime over the past couple of years.

What I'm probably going to do is start a style blog sometime soon so I can keep being me in this one.

Crisis averted. I think.

People I'm told I look like

I sent LisaMarie this pic from a party last week, and she said I was channeling Kate Hudson with that look. (That was after I drank a Blue Hawaiian martini at Gamekeepers in Chagrin Falls. I did NOT lick a smurf.)

I am also told I look like:

1) Reese Witherspoon (all the time)

2) Jenny McCarthy

3) Chelsea Handler (from Chelsea Lately on E!)

The only one I agree with is Reese. Sometimes I do a double take when I'm waking by a mirror "Hey, there's Reese Witherspoon! Oh, it's only me". Plus we are the same height, which also helps.

Here's me after "letting my hair down."

That's a whole lotta zebra, I know. My clothes aren't usually that loud! If my face was channeling Kate Hudson, my outfit was definitely channeling Samantha Jones. I had a tomato red skirt and metallic gold 3" heel sandals, in addition to the loud zebra top.

Wild!

Shopping - Caveman Style

Most people know me as a fashion expert. And for some reason, they always seem to want to tell me what they don’t like about shopping. I hear a lot of the same laments again and again:

“There’s so much stuff in the stores. I get overwhelmed.”
“I go right to the clearance rack so I can buy more!”
“I have a lot of clothes with the tags still on them.”
“I’ve wasted so much money on clothes over the years.”
“I bought a (top, dress,
skirt, pair of pants, etc…), but it never looked right on me. But I never got rid of it.”

Do you see yourself above? I bet you do. Once upon a time, that was me too.

That is, until I learned to shop like a caveman.

I know what you’re thinking….last year, Kristen was a rum-swigging fashion pirate (arrrgh matey!) and a CSI solving style crimes, and she has those imaginary (but very pesky) monkeys living in her closet. Now she’s a shopping caveman. Am I crazy? Well, maybe. But hear me out!!

I’m working with a nutrition doctor, who told me that I should only be eating what I would find if I lived in the Metroparks - or if I was a caveman. It goes along with the sage advice I read a couple of years ago in a book called The Origin Diet. The message is that our bodies have not evolved to be able to eat what we find in the grocery store these days. We’re still programmed exactly like our ancestors who lived millions of years ago were – to eat fish and wild game, plants and fruit. Not sugar, processed foods, hormone-infused cattle, pigs and chickens, or even grains. There were times of feast and times of famine. And the only sugar found in the caveman diet was when they would find honey on occasion – and they had to fight the bees to get to it!

It doesn’t help our cause that we don’t have to canvass miles and miles of forest to forage for food – too many of us are couch potatoes, and it explains why so many people in our modern world are so overweight.

We have access to too much food – and it’s too easy to get to – we just drive to the supermarket. You can find food in thousands of varieties, and it comes to us from all over the world.

Now just replace the word “food” above with the word “clothes” and the word “supermarket” with the word “mall,” and you have the reason why most of us have far more clothes than we will ever need – and why most of us make a lot of poor choices in what we buy.

Junk food looks yummy in the package, doesn’t it? But if we eat enough of it….it definitely doesn’t look good on us. Likewise, “junk clothes” are just that - clothes that may look great on the hanger – but not so great on us. Or they’re clothes we like and plan to make an outfit with “someday,” but we don’t. Or we buy them because they’re on sale or just plain cheap.

Whatever way they get into our closet, they’re just adding extra weight – and no substance.
Other times we buy clothes just because we’re momentarily “starving” – we may be thrown into a panic because we have to go somewhere special and we need an outfit. We normally end up settling, don’t we? It’s rarely an outfit we love and want to wear again and again.

Cavemen didn’t have options like going to the cupboard for a bag of Cheetos. And if they were starving, they looked for the most nutrition-packed food they could get their hands, spears or clubs on – whether they found a patch of berries or a mastodon.

It can be so easy to gorge ourselves – filling our closets and sometimes spending way too much – because there are thousands of items to buy at any given department store or discount store smorgasbord.

But realistically, how many clothes do we really need? Let’s learn from the cavemen!

1. Go hunting for Mammoths!
A caveman would innately conserve his resources – mainly time and energy - looking for the “big kill.” He would pass up a rodent for a mammoth because it provided greater sustenance for a longer period of time. Likewise, if you can learn to identify a “mammoth” (an item of clothing that is classic, high quality, and looks great on you), you will be happy to wear it again and again. Twenty rodents (or twenty pieces of “junk clothing”) will never equal one mammoth.

If you learn how to only “slay mammoths,” you will conserve your precious resources too – your valuable time, energy and money!
Go ahead. Slay a mammoth!
These are two of my mammoths – and no I am NOT talking about LisaMarie (left) or Wendy! If you know me for long enough, you will see me wear my teal BCBG sweater set with the ruffled collar and my

white casual jacket with yellow, red and orange flowers. Year after year, they are my trusted go-to pieces. They look great and make me feel amazing.

2. Stay away from the Bees!
Research tells us that most people living in western societies are truly addicted to sugar. We use it as a form of self-medication to temporarily boost our mood and make us feel better. Isn’t this how a lot of us would explain our need for “retail therapy?” Hey, we feel great briefly – until the momentary high is gone - or until we get our credit card bill. Or in the long-term, when we clean out our closet and realize just how much we spent on stuff we don’t even like. If we can learn to control the desire to buy clothes mindlessly (i.e., not putting sugary “junk food” into our wardrobe), we will only raid the hive on those rare occasions when we know exactly what we need - and when we have a plan to outsmart the bees :)

3. Remember, Cavemen are the Best Shoppers
To shop for clothes wisely means that you look first for Colors that look great on you. If the color works, next check to see if the item of clothing looks good on your Body. Wear clothes that flatter you – the size doesn’t matter! And if your item passes the first two checkpoints, the Style should fit your fashion personality. And if it does, then you’ll know you have a mammoth cornered in the cave, er, I mean in the dressing room!

So go ahead, my fellow cavemen, indulge your primal instincts. Grab your spear and hunt for the right pieces for your wardrobe. Go to several stores if you need to. Get out of your comfort zone, but don’t outspend your budget. And definitely don’t settle for rodents!

P.S. Leave your fur pelt at home – or hope you don’t run into a member of PETA!

Partying with the Browns!

Aaah, the holidays with friends. Thursday night, my awesome friend Michelle White-Grady and I finally connected for dinner and drinks at Bar Louie. I happened to be in Beachwood shopping with my client from New Jersey when she called to say "Merry Christmas." So I was like, "Wanna get dinner? I'm right here at the mall!" (She lives a couple of streets away.)

She told me the funniest story about how she almost dated the comedian Sinbad back in her college days. And some other stories about college that I can't repeat.

(Thanks for the beautiful scarf, MWG - I wore it last night :)

Bar Louie Voodoo Martinis are the BEST!! Pretty much anything with Stoli Blueberi is yum.

Then I was out last night with my new friend Lisa - first we had dinner at Marmalade in Beachwood (the place is ORANGE! I want to live there!!). Then we did a little shopping and checked out what was happening at Red & Moxie.

Well....the table next to the
bar at Red was filled with opened Christmas gifts and a bunch of guys having a blast. Somehow we found out they were some of the Browns - the running backs, to be more specific - and they were having a little Christmas party and birthday celebration for their RB coach Anthony (the guy wearing the Super Bowl ring). We got to hang out with Jamal Lewis, Jason Wright and Jerome Harrison. Really nice guys. I felt a little dorky asking them who they were because I know them by their names and numbers, and I have no idea who they are in their street clothes.

And no, I am not a typical girlie girl who knows nothing about sports and was in awe because they are "celebrities." I am a lifelong Browns fan! (If I could type little orange hearts here, I would! OK, these work.)

And yes, I do know football terminology and a lot of NFL history (learned through osmosis or something - I am a weird knowledge sponge!).

Jason Wright (#29) really impressed me. He's a really nice and humble guy. Absolutely LOVES playing here in Cleveland. Loves the Cleveland people (because we're REAL, baby!). And he loves that we love the Browns so much. He's from L.A. (he said the Blizzard Bowl was the wildest thing he's ever seen), went to college in Chicago, played in Atlanta and now he lives in Ohio City!

Pretty cool night for Lisa and me!

(What did the running backs get in their gift exchange? Xboxes, iPods and accessories, Louis Vuitton belts, etc.)

GO BROWNS! BEAT CINCY!
(We actually have a chance to win the division. It is slim...but there IS a chance. We love our Browns, but we especially love them when they are actually good - admittedly rare - and we have something to brag about to our friends in other cities. Take THAT, LisaMarie and Jill in Cincinnati!!! Good thing I really don't know anyone in Pittsburgh!!)

Requiem for an Old Friend

I received an email this past week from my friend Sandy stating that my old stomping ground, Dallas Shoes, was closing. It sounded like the clearance had been going on for a little while already and I should hurry up if I wanted to get some good stuff before the end.

I used to cut classes during college and go shopping at their old location on Rockside. That was perhaps the greatest predictor of my future career. Screw higher learning, give me shoes!

Dallas closed once before. They used to have several locations. Then one of the parters apparently reopened with just the one big store in North Randall by the mall. Now that store is closing.

There was a sign on the outside of Dallas Shoes that said, "Grand Opening - Fur & Leather Outlet." So I went in, and other than the front right side of the store being partitioned off with fur and leather coats and all the security that comes along with them, the store looked exactly as it has always looked. Still has tons of shoes, clothes and accessories.

Shoes and boots, clothing and accessories were 30% off, sandals were 70% off. Sadly, I had about 5 pairs of shoe boxes stacked up, but I ended up with none. No shoes for KK. Sad day :(

There wasn't a single pair that I couldn't live without.

I did find a cool orange "Serengeti Tours" T-shirt (I dream of going on safari one day), 3 winter hats and a scarf. My collection of winter accessories has grown by leaps and bounds in the last two years. I was having a good hair day until I started trying on wool hats. Can you say "static electricity?!!" My hair went wild!

I was talking to a couple of the sales women who have worked there 17 years (wow!) and 2 years, respectively. They were both sad and saying they didn't know what they were going to do, so I took down their info and said I would see if any of my retail connections would help them find other jobs. That's really awful news just before the holidays.

I am still looking for my elusive cute winter shoes (that are not boots). Going shopping tomorrow with Leslie the Search Guru at Great Northern, so perhaps I will find some. I haven't checked DSW yet. They also have a K&G out there with women's clothes, so I will stop in there too. And they have a great Marshalls. I'll also probably pop by Stein Mart in Westlake too while I'm way out west.

*

Confidential to my dear LML: I hope you are feeling better soon, babe. I know this is hard for you. You'll be OK.

KK's Crazy Life

Whew!
It has been a really wild week for yours truly - culminating with an AICI board meeting in Columbus on Sunday. We've never had a board-only meeting before, and it has been needed for a long time. Since I'm the prez, I can do these kinds of things (I'm mad with power, I tell ya!). I got to see three of my fellow board members and great friends - the lovely LisaMarie Luccioni, Erica Torres-Dudziak and Jill Haney. If you want to see three super sharp, intelligent and beautiful women, here they are. Love those girls.

Here's a pic of us at Bon Vie Bistro at Easton Town Center:

(Wow, I look like a wild woman compared to them! Maybe I am - hehe :)

Lisa and I had a chance to practice our rudimentary fran
çais - and we did okay. Comme ci, comme ça. Between us, we probably have 12 years of French classes, and all we could do was tell each other we looked good. Well, c'est la vie for image experts! We're so self-congratulatory!!

I did a little shopping at Polaris Mall after the meeting. Nothing too great - I bought an interesting necklace at Forever 21.

Here it is -
Orange and unusual. I had to have it!

I'm such a goofball - I realized how predictable I truly am. I was holding up a leopard print sweater in a mirror to see how it would look on me and I couldn't really tell and I couldn't figure out why. And then - duh! - I realized the leopard print on the sweater was clashing with the leopard print on my jacket.
How silly :P

Well, I've decided that this girl deserves some rest after the wild week. Catch ya later!

Asked the etiquette expert (LML, of course!)

So, of course I sent the previous blog entry to the lovely and talented LisaMarie Luccioni, Queen of Tact. Here is her response....
***
Hiya, Doll:

Actually it's interesting you blog on this topic. This past Friday, I lectured on interviewing to my honors-PLUS scholars. I highlighted how people like to have their first and last names both SPELLED CORRECTLY and how doing so was an "attention to detail" issue...this speaks to professionalism and going the extra mile.

Luccioni often gets blundered or when people write my name, they'll separate it without noticing...I prefer it one word, thank you very much. God love the people who will ASK me my preference if there is confusion: "Do you prefer Lisa or LisaMarie". I'll get that often. Good of them for asking.

I agree with you...we all make mistakes and are fallible, but in terms of perception (especially those oh-so-important first ones), this can be a deal-breaker.

love...the one-worded....

Assaulted at the Browns Game

I was fortunate to be at Sunday's Browns game with my good friend Dan Hanson. He has some great season tickets. I was with him last year at the best game of the year (vs. Chiefs at the beginning of December) and again yesterday for what will definitely be one of the highlights of this season (they have a lot of work to do for the next 14 games if they want to top this outing).

So yes, I am sensing a pattern here. Kiki = Good Luck for the Browns

Last week against Pittsburgh was such a trainwreck, it (almost) put Britney at the VMA's to shame. Surely one of the worst embarrassments in Browns history....

My highlight (??) was getting knocked in the head by one of Dan's 4-ton elbows. He was standing up cheering and I was in the process of standing and all I remember was seeing stars and severe pain. Today, I have a big lump on the top of my head, a headache, ringing ears and my eyes look funny. Minor concussion perhaps?

Despite the head trauma, it was a good day. The Browns won, it was a beautiful day to sit outside, and as always, we laughed a lot. Despite the obvious visual differences - about a foot in height, one who is a Cleveland Fashionista, the other is the Great Lakes Geek and proudly wears 12-year old sweat shorts, Dan and I are eerily similar. What did I call our friendship? Strange and unexpected? It's pretty accurate.

***
Sunday was a good day for others as well:

1) I am so proud of LisaMarie for speaking to the masses at the University of Cincinnati's Convocation yesterday. She was the keynoter. You made your University, your family, your AICI Chapter, and your dear friend KK very proud, Professor! Congrats!!! (Being invited to keynote the UC Convocation is a BIG DEAL.)

2) I was delighted to hear that my favorite show, 30 Rock won the Emmy for best comedy last night! I always think back to seeing Tina Fey and Rachel Dratch at Second City Chicago in 1996 and Jason Sudeikis (from SNL and a guest star on 30 Rock) at Second City Vegas in 2003.

Who knew?!?

(Yes, I still love The Office, but 30 Rock is a stroke of absurdist brilliance!)

Notes from Labor Day

I didn't do too much today. Good thing. I feel like I am getting sick. Thanks, mom. I don't get to see my mom or grandparents terribly often (my fault - they all live less than 10 miles away), but I went out to dinner with them on Friday night. My mom felt a cold coming on, and by last night, I was getting it too. Ugh.

Fast forward to today and I have been drinking tea and eating Cold-eeze like candy. I am trying like crazy to keep it away.

Spoke with LisaMarie tonight. Lots of stuff that makes one want to say "GRRRRR" going on down in Cincy. A little anxiety and frustration. But it's always good to connect with my dear friend. She is one of the few people with whom I actively seek out phone conversations. I know, I'm a girl, right, I'm supposed to love talking on the phone. I am definitely one of the exceptions.

Maybe it's the out of town factor. I had a long conversation with Kel last night because she is far away again. Back at FIT in NYC. When she's here in town, we usually connect over coffee.

I gave her a mantra that she is using in her senior year: Last year, last year, last year (keep repeating...)

She can't wait for this school year to end.

I wish Lisa lived closer. Ugh. Seeing her a handful of times every year just doesn't cut it :(

Look at how cute we are partying it up at Sunset Lounge a couple of weeks ago!
KK & LML: Both born at Fairview General Hospital! A very strange coincidence since Lisa's family is from PA (as is my Gram) and she has lived all her life in Cincinnati! Go figure....

And now back to me actively seeking out video from Dateline: To Catch a Predator online (it's not on right now on MSNBC).

It's not like I have a book or articles to write or anything....disgusting predators come first!

By the way, I have caught a couple of episodes recently of the Style network's "Life in the Fab Lane" with Kimora Lee Simmons.

I find myself disliking her intensely. Part of me says it is just her playing to the cameras, but I really do believe we are seeing her and her world fairly accurately. For all of us future magnates out there, this is clearly NOT the way to behave - whether there are cameras following us around or not. I am all for being rich and fabulous, but I don't think one needs to be a diva and loudmouth to be influential and feel important.

Some of us still respect class and dignity.

Image Consultants Invade Cleveland

It was my pleasure to host a 3-day retreat here in Cleveland this weekend as president of the Association of Image Consultants Ohio-Pennsylvania Chapter!

It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime life and business transforming event.

We had people come to town from Cincinnati (Hey Lisa and Jill! So glad you were here!!), Columbus, and even Pittsburgh!

The weekend started with a trip on Lolly the Trolley. As I was getting my hair done earlier that day, my hair stylist Julia told me that Lolly the Trolley was "so retro." It is? Hilarious! I remember taking a trip on it in 6th grade. So I guess it IS retro!

We had the best time on the trolley and it gave the folks from out of town a quick perspective on our host city and gave those of us who were born here a lot of facts we didn't know. (Chef Boyardee is from Cleveland? As is John Heisman, for whom the Heisman Trophy is named.)

My dear friend LisaMarie Luccioni then led us in an etiquette dinner at the Metropolitan Cafe and Kelly and I went to the Velvet Dog afterward. I stayed out a little late, with the full knowledge that Saturday was going to be one long day.

Saturday was amazing. Our day started out with Coach Joelle who had us drawing and dancing and somehow we formed a conga line and were conga-ing around the conference room at the Downtown Marriott. (KK is one girl who hates looking like a dork, so this was an interesting experience!) We then heard from Leslie Carruthers, The Search Guru on search engine optimization. SEO is such a mystery to most of us image people. But I'm learning! (I'm trying to learn HTML with a book whose main character is a 3.5" floppy disk illustration with a face - HTML for kindergartners. I promise not to tell Mr. Floppy that he is obsolete.)

After presentations from Kelly Smith on hearing Martha Stewart speak about business in NYC and Debbie Carney on business organization, I did a program called "Getting to the Next Level Now: Platform Building for Impatient People!"

After our day of learning, we laughed, drank and dined at Ponte Vecchio on the Superior Viaduct and went to Sunset Lounge for salsa dancing! I think I almost broke my ankle twice in my 2" platforms, with Leslie leading and me following - badly.

Sunday, we had hairstylist Jen Gonzalez, who studied with Nick Arrojo, from TLC's What Not to Wear. That was quite eye-opening for me. I admit I know far too little about doing my own hair, let alone someone else's. And YAY! LisaMarie let her own hair down and graciously allowed Jen to play with it - transforming her into LML v.2.0 - hot and gorgeous!

Then we heard from my friend Samuel Hilliard, Jr. from Jos. A Bank Clothiers at Legacy Village, who discussed the importance of building partnerships with clients and vendors and explained the specifics of menswear.

All in all, it was a thoroughly fabulous weekend for all of us who attended and presented and we are looking forward to doing it again next year!

Wild & Fruity

As I continue to write my book, my therapy (or what keeps me out of a straightjacket) is doing a little shopping here and there. My daily writing uniform inlcudes a track suit, t-shirt with a girly saying (i.e., “Eye Candy”, “Smart Blonde”, “Hell on Heels”, "I'm naturally blonde, so please speak slowly" – the shirts I don’t dare leave the house in!), and my hair is up in a bun. Really attractive, I know. But it serves its purpose. Writing a book is a no nonsense, zero glamour business.

But I am shopping for next summer. After the book is finished, I plan to have lots of FUN, FUN, FUN and maybe go on a cruise or take a vacation to Hawaii.

My wardrobe is reflecting my future fun in a really strange way.

Somewhere along this journey, I unconsciously decided to dress like a big bowl of fruit.

I’ve always said that women – including me – rely too heavily on their basics. Mainly, this means we wear too much black. Right now though, I’m sailing in untested waters for me. I called it “true style evolution” to LisaMarie. I am buying only what I’m attracted to on a very primal level.

And believe me, it’s fruity.

The colors of lime, tangerine, tomato red (tomatoes, are, after all, really fruits), bright grape, lemon yellow, kiwi and watermelon are attracting me right now and I’m powerless to resist.

I’m not wearing pastels or colors muted or toned down in any way. I want everything to be pure and bright. And the patterns I am selecting are absolutely wild. I don’t know where this is coming from. All I can say is that a force greater than me is at work here. I must be celebrating something on the inside and it’s bubbling to the surface.

As a professional color analyst, I will admit I am taking a few liberties with my color palette. So sue me! I have no choice in the matter.

I only hope I am feeling this wild and fruity next summer when I actually have to wear these clothes :P

On the Loose

I am pleased to say that blaming monkeys for messy spaces
is catching on!

Debbie the Professional Organizer:
I met with a client in Rocky River this am....she was telling me about her piles of papers...and I said "Oh, you must have MONKEYS!!!! I told her about your monkey problems and she laughed.

LisaMarie:
The monkeys are in operation at my house too.

Pretty soon the monkeys will start taking over everyone's homes and offices and making everything a big mess. We may need to start a monkey sterilization project.

I think Bob Barker needs a job:
"Don't forget to spay or neuter your monkeys."

I think it's a fantastic idea!

Me & My "Sisters"

I was putting some art together for the AICI OH/PA Chapter Retreat when I realized something absolutely weird:

Me and my "inner circle", who are all presenting at the event, could pass for sisters. What the heck is up with that????

I already know that LisaMarie and I are morphing into the same person, and Kelly is my "little sis", but this is freaky.

Check it out!

I have been beseeched....

My beloved friend, the mystically tan LisaMarie literally beseeched me:

Kristen, for the love of God, comment on the early release of Paris Hilton in one of your future blogs, will you?

I am simply appalled, as are my students and fellow colleagues. Any plans to do so with your razor-sharp wit?

Since I am a sucker for compliments about my wit, I will comment. This is what I sent back to Lisa:

I think it is beyond comment, friend.
I try to point out the funny and/or ironic in my blog.
This is just sick and disgusting. The justice system is a joke, apparently.
I am sad.
:(

I'm afraid that some things are just beyond sardonic commentary.

Orange is the New Tan?

Friends, I am not a big fan of celebrity gossip. But something just struck me.

Why is Lindsay Lohan perpetually
ORANGE? Have you noticed this?

Too much Mystic Tan, I fear!! LisaMarie just did the Mystic. I feel the need to warn her:

It may be responsible for killing Lindsay's brain cells.

Or maybe that's just Lindsay's use of vodka, cigarettes and recreational and prescription drugs which accounts for her perpetually bizarre and sometimes knife-wielding behavior.

Still, Lisa looks tan, while Lindsay always looks orange. Perhaps it isn't the tanning. Maybe she is part oompa loompa.

I still remember when we used to worry about turning orange from self-tanners. Thank goodness for technology - self-tanners get better every year. We can have a natural-looking bronze glow from a bottle or a tube if we choose.

So, again, there seems to be no explanation for Lindsay Loompa.

A Launch in the Works

I am absolutely delighted to tell you a secret! And no, it’s not the name of my book!! I am so excited about this brand new project we are working on! I was hopped up on caffeine a few nights ago and bought a domain at 2am.

This will be a new content-based, national website that is dedicated to my target market. It will be the natural and logical progression of my brand after my book comes out.

The usual suspects will be writing for it, of course. Me on professional image and personal style, Wendy the Makeup Junkie on skin care and makeup, Miss Kel on fashion trends, and Coach Joelle with all the marvelous stuff she does. There is no description for Joelle’s magic. And that is exactly what it is - magic.

Adding to that most awesome lineup will be Professor LisaMarie Luccioni - my girl who I am so proud of!! Speaking at the AICI conference in Minneapolis this past week and rocking the house!! Lisa is a fabulous communications and etiquette expert who I love to death.

And for now, last but not least, I am hoping to bring the lovely and talented Chris Brondel onboard for career advice.

The site will touch on what young women need to know. I would also like to bring a relationships expert, a fitness and nutrition guru, and a personal finance expert into the mix. I have some people in mind, but I will announce them after they agree.

I am just so excited to embark on this most excellent adventure that we are planning to launch in the fall :)

Now, I just have to get this book finished.

Joelle, wave your magic wand, please!!!

Random Thoughts on May Day

I just opened the envelope Coach Joelle gave me yesterday, which was supposed to contain a parking permit for Friday's can't-wait-for-it meeting downtown. I was pleasantly surprised at the card and little KK-specific inspirational messages inside. Thanks, Joelle! You made my day! I especially loved:

Lead me not into temptation;
I can find the way myself.

(oh yes, there was also a parking permit in there)

I changed the desktop on my laptop on Saturday from spaz hot pink to Kermit the Frog and a green background. It's amazing how it has changed my mood and intention - already. Whenever my eyes are strained or my book project gets overwhelming, I flip to my desktop, which is all green and in the center is my friend Kermie:This is a subject for a different blog, but it's my opinion that Kermit is the perfect symbol for all that is good and right and optimistic in the world. When I see him (and I suspect this is the same for a lot of people out there, whether they realize it or not), I feel very centered. He's a very pure character.

Maybe I'm crazy. But I've always had an affection for Kermit.

I
am - still - just a huge fan of the Muppets. In addition to my green friend, I especially love the grumpy characters (as I always do) Statler and Waldorf - and Oscar, although technically not a Muppet -

he's still a Henson character.

I was eagerly paying attention to the NFL draft on Saturday and to a lesser extent on Sunday. I don't pay as much attention to other sports as I do to football. I was hopefully looking at some future clients! The Browns were the talk of the sports world. They had an unfathomably good draft. How exciting to think about the seasons down the road. That's all we keep hearing about around here (well, that and the darn Fulton Road Bridge still standing - blow up already!) and it's really exciting.

I remember in about 1985 seeing a bumper sticker that cracked me up. It said

GO BROWNS
and take the Indians with you

We have a tragic sports history here in Cleveland. Heartbreaking. But now with the Cavaliers being awesome (sweeping the first round of the playoffs) and the Browns' draft day coup, things are definitely looking up!

I miss LisaMarie. Although, I suspect that if we lived in the same town, neither of us would get anything accomplished because we'd always be hanging out together!! It's better for us to keep a safe distance! Cincy to Cleveland - too far but just far enough!!

Death Wish

I am serious about hiding out until September and not doing my usual 'networking bimbo' stuff (thanks for the moniker, Mary). This is so tough because underneath everything, I am truly a social butterfly. So therefore, locking myself in my ivory tower to work alone is very annoying!!

And to think I have committed to following this up with at least
3 more books!

Am I crazy??

Wait - don't answer that!

Or maybe I just have a death wish....

Either way, I will be blogging and complaining about it to everyone I know!!!

Confidential to LML:
Keep that flash drive close to your heart, doll!! I believe in you!!!!

LisaMarie Approves of Man Bags to Fight Terrorism

From LisaMarie:
Using "man bags" to fight terrorism! I suppose we could carry this rationale through and pretty much rationalize anything as LONG AS IT FIGHTS TERRORISM.

LML hates terrorism, KK, and whatever means may be used to help us stamp out such virulent hatred.....man bags, included.

KK:
I think each of our men in Iraq and Afghanistan should have a stylish man bag for fighting the War on Terror.

In fact, I am partial to this sleek and masculine style. >

Our women in uniform, well, they probably already have sexy bags to carry their rations, grenades, etc. Sexiness, no doubt, is first and foremost on the minds of the designers of military gear. Especially in times of war....

LisaMarie's Oscar Rebuttal

The lovely Ms. LisaMarie Luccioni had a couple of challenges for my Oscar fashion review. Here is her response:

Nooooooooooooooooooo.....Penelope Cruz looked bee-yoo-ti-ful.....

Reese! Looked glorious (if I had the body, that's what I would have worn...but then again, I have an affinity for more classic, bordering-on-boring sort of looks). But I just love her in general.

Meryl Streep. What the ??? I've seen her look good. Don't know what happened last night.

Jennifer Hudson. Totally agree. Absolutely.

Cate Blanchett. That body. That face. Striking, not regular "pretty". Plus she kicks...well you know...in talent.

I love Nicole! I love Nicole! I want to be Nicole!

***
For the record, the red carpet fashion maven and her daughter (Joan & Melissa Rivers) agree with you, LML! KK is still seen as a renegade in Oscar fashion circles....
